BEFORE and AFTER CYLONE ALFRED

Well, it seems most of SEQ may soon have a free temporary pool in their backyard 😉 – FOR ALL POOLS OZ pool owners, our KEY TIPS are to be prepared – BEFORE – and AFTER the storm ;

Before ;

  1. You can LOWER THE WATER LEVEL ( e.g.; 10 to 15cms ) just slightly to allow for rainwater overflow, but ALWAYS keep the water level half way up the skimmer box.
  2. MOVE LOOSE ITEMS – e.g., the pool umbrellas, poolside furniture, slides etc… where possible – to the shed.
  3. DO NOT DRAIN YOUR POOL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES – think about it as equal pressure – from groundwater OUTSIDE the pool as being equal to – the pressure of the water INSIDE your pool – otherwise the concrete shell may crack, or rise.
  4. Don’t COVER YOUR Pool – you may lose that in the winds, a better idea is to store your pool blankets in the garage or shed.
  5. TURN OFF or DISCONNECT all electrical equipment to prevent damage from power surges , flooding and lightning. ( eg heaters, saltwater chlorinators, lights)

After –

  1. REMOVE RUBBISH AND BRANCHES , if there are a lot of leaves in the pool, you may need to drop the water level just below the skimmer box to help get the surface waste into the skimmer.
  2. EMPTY LEAVES from all pool baskets
  3. CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENT – don’t turn it on till you’ve checked for damage
  4. KEEP THE PUMP TURNED ON for a day or two if it has become flooded
  5. RESET THE TIMER for your chlorinator, and if power has been lost, of course you will need to RESET THE FILTER TIMES.
  6. Now is a good opportunity to RINSE CARTRIDGE FILTERS AND/ or BACKWASH THE POOL. NB Not all Cartridge Filters have a waste line, so you may have to use your garden hose to siphon some water out.
  7. WATER BALANCE – a great deal of fresh water can change the PH balance , you’ll probably use your usual professional to get a proper reading, and a green pool will need treatment. Also get your salt levels right for your chlorinator
  8. If your pool is BROWN, you will need to FLOCK it causing mud to sink to the bottom so it can be vacuumed. It’s very unlikely your usual Kreepy Krauly style cleaner will cope with this., ALWAYS vacuum to waste
